Since its founding in 1966 as Bath University of Technology, the University of Bath has built a strong reputation for applying science and technology to real-world challenges. While the institution has evolved over time, its core mission—to bridge science and society—remains central, with a growing emphasis on collaboration, innovation, and global engagement.
Project Information
Client: University of Bath – Virgil Building
Location: Bath
Date: September 2024
Brief
The project called for the design of a bright, modern student study space across three floors of a four-storey building. The primary aim was to enhance the student experience by creating an inclusive environment suitable for all users, including those with disabilities.
A key requirement was that the furniture be durable, robust, and capable of withstanding a regular cleaning regime, ensuring it remained fresh and well-presented over time.
The project began with a visit to the Virgil Building in the centre of Bath. At that time, the space served a dual purpose: providing office accommodation for university staff and offering a study area for students based in the city centre.
Highlights
Versatile flip-top tables and the Snuggle modular sofa system were chosen to create a flexible, modern space that can adapt to both group and individual study needs. These solutions support multifunctional use and are easy to reconfigure or store as required.
Agile working areas, enhanced by mobile ‘Show’ screens and planters, provide flexible zones for collaboration or focused work. These elements also add acoustic control, visual interest, and a contemporary feel to the environment. Chatbox pods, offering quiet spaces for focused study. Together, these choices meet the brief’s goals for a bright, robust, and inclusive student space.
Accessibility was prioritised with inclusive features like Trinity Meeting Booths, which accommodate wheelchair users comfortably.
Challenges
The challenge was to create a flexible, inclusive study environment within a tight six-week timeframe—from receipt of order to full installation. The furniture selected needed to support a variety of study styles and abilities, from collaborative group work to focused individual study. This required a mix of high and low tables, chairs, stools, and ample soft seating to deliver both functionality and a relaxed, modern aesthetic that would soften the overall look and feel of the space.
Solution
Our design approach began with a deep understanding of the University of Bath’s culture and the specific needs outlined in the brief. Including multiple site visits to allow us to see the space firsthand and understand how the students and staff with use the building day-to-day.
Key design principles were embedded into the solution, including zoning the space for a variety of activities. Dedicated areas were created for focused work, group discussions, and informal social interaction, with flexible furniture that can be easily reconfigured to adapt to changing needs.
Well-being and inclusivity were central to our approach. The integration of acoustic pods and private zones reflects the growing demand for quiet, personal spaces within open-plan environments. The overall environment aims to be modern and calming, helping reduce stress and enhance productivity.
Our solution also considers long-term impact, with sustainability, technology integration, and future-proofing all forming part of the design. By blending current furniture trends with the practical and cultural needs of the university, we have delivered a space that is not only fit for purpose today but flexible and robust enough to adapt for years to come.
